DCVW / May Arts Challenge: Refurbished Shadowbox

By Theresa Calderini on June 13th, 2012 »

Hi everyone! I’m so excited today is finally here!! DCVW & May Arts have revealed all the creations from those selected to participate in the May Arts Challenge and my Shadowbox is part of the excitement!!

I had purchased this shadowbox over a year ago at a yard sale for a small amount of money and knew that one day I would make it into something beautiful that could be displayed. The man who made the box shared with me that he was a woodworker and made these boxes for a local nursing homes Alzheimer’s unit. They would have pictures in them of each patient and hung outside of their room for all to stop enjoy. I could tell by the way he talked that this was a special project for him, to make these shadowboxes and I promised him that I would take good care of it and turn it into something beautiful.

Shadowbox “Before”

When I saw the advertisement for the DCVW / May Arts Challenge in May, I immediately entered my name into the ring, sharing my idea for bringing the shadowbox back to life and I was accepted!! I prepped and painted the box black and got to work building each square that would be used in the box. The DCVW Paper stack had gorgeous papers, full of bright images and sparkle…..combined with the luscious May Arts ribbon, which I used to build flowers for several of the squares, my excitement grew as I worked for hours pulling this arrangement together!

For a final touch, I “happened upon” a small antique shop that had peacock feathers and just knew they would work perfectly with this project! I curled the feathers and mounted onto the outside of the frame along with a black flower with feathers I had in my stash. The pictures just can’t do justice for this shadowbox collection…..when I look at it, I can’t help but be pleased with the outcome!

I’m so pleased to have been given the opportunity by DCVW and May Arts to contribute to this challenge and thank them for all the wonderful supplies!! I’ll definitely be visiting their websites and partner stores to purchase more projects……now……I’ve got to figure out how to get my hands on another shadowbox!!!

Be sure to visit DCVW & May Arts to see all the wonderful creations for this challenge!!
