Living a Life of Prayer – The Prayer Box

The idea of prayer has been heavy on my mind lately…..for quite a few months actually.

I’ve been examining my own level of commitment to prayer, why I pray, how I pray and if I really believe in prayer.

“I’ll pray for you”…..if I could earn a dime for every time someone has said this, right? This common “comfort phrase” has grown in popularity it seems, becoming more visible through social media, so many posts on Facebook about real life tough situations and we respond “I’ll pray for you”

Do we mean it? Or, is it just something we can respond with to let the person in need know we aren’t ignoring them and to show the world that we’re present we type these 4 little words. But what happens next? Do we stop and pray? Do we make a note of this persons request and intentionally pray for their situation more than once? And most important……do we believe that God will answer the prayer?

Now you see where my mind and my heart have been focused! I remember back to when I was young, my Nana had a box in her bedroom that I spotted one day and inquired of its contents. She told me it held many of her prayer notes. Now, my Nana was a powerful follower of Jesus, her actions spoke for her as each day she sat quietly in prayer, I’m sure she prayed for all those who had needs which included those who she had told “I’ll pray for you”. And she believed!! Nana had faith in God’s ability to answer prayer, she understood that answered prayer wasn’t always yes, it wasn’t always the best answer but that’s where her faith was strong. I look back now remembering her and I understand her commitment to praying for others and her belief that we are to pray and then have faith!

I began researching prayer boxes and making them out of cigar boxes. I learned that the prayer box is very symbolic, it is decorated and displayed but its purpose if farm more important than the box itself.

You see, a prayer box is symbolic of our prayer relationship with Christ. We write down our prayers, for ourselves, for others, for those needing prayer for salvation, for healing, all those prayers we hold in our head and our hearts and we place them in the prayer box. This symbolizes placing our prayers in God’s hands because only He has the ability to answer them right?!

Once our prayers are placed in the prayer boxes, we move on to the next step which is a biggie!! We close the lid on the box and have faith! The lid symbolizes God covering our prayers – We aren’t to go pull the prayers out of the box, read them over and start questioning and doubting what will happen next. We’re to close the lid, place our faith in God and believe in answered prayer! (In HIS time of course!!)

Isn’t that beautiful? These prayer boxes have become a bit popular in my circle and I love that! Ladies are gathering together and creating boxes and hopefully, using them to strengthen their prayer lives!

This prayer box was one I poured myself into, I had no recipient for it at the time I made it but God always presses a name on my heart for the things I make so I waited patiently for His direction. Our Bible Fellowship ladies got together one night to make boxes; we were missing one very special lady…..Bonnie. Bonnie would have come were she not weakened by her battle with cancer. Although she wasn’t with us on that special night, I felt God’s answer for the recipient of my prayer box…..of course it was for Bonnie.

Prayerboxes

We gave Bonnie the box the following Sunday in our class (She surprised us by being there!) How precious to know that the prayer box was now in the hands of a powerful prayer warrior! No need to explain prayer to Bonnie…..it was the center of her existence…..when she said “I’ll pray for you” there was no doubt that she would!

Several weeks after giving Bonnie her prayer box she went home to be with the Lord. At her celebration of Life service, her husband Jay spoke about Bonnie’s faith and her firm belief in prayer. My heart was so stirred by his words; I knew Bonnie was one who got it…..now it was time for me to “get it” as well…..

G45 Peach Prayer Box3I’m a work in progress but I understand more each day of the power and beauty of prayer! You don’t need a fancy prayer box to pray…..grab a shoe box, a notebook or just get down on your knees and open your hear to the Lord! He hears our prayers and answers them! We only need to remember to pray and to believe!

Philippians 4:6-7 :do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Beautiful sentiment, and I am sure Bonnie understood fully what the box represented. I recall Nana’s prayer notes, it seemed like her list never ended and she payed respect to each and every request. What a legacy she left for us all!

Hey that’s really cool! I must admit I was kinda clueless about the term prayer box but now that I’ve read your blog, it makes sense! I was there when Bonnie got the prayer box and the look on her faces said she loved it and I know it made her feel special!
    Thanks for sharing!
